Phil Lear

Biography

As a narrative figurative painter, Phil’s mission is to create work that embodies a classical ideal, while capturing the imagination of his viewers, and making a personal connection. He favors a muted palette and often warm tones, rendering intriguing figurative scenes with a fresh painterly realism.

Following an illustration-focused degree in commercial art, Phil traveled and took on various projects that nurtured his creative skills, before settling in Colorado Springs. Here he made his first forays into the professional art world. He became a charter member of the Portrait Society of America, and began painting with an undeniable sense of purpose, displaying work in many public exhibitions and competitions, including a large number of solo receptions.

In subject matter he is a story-teller. His often odd settings are peopled with playful and mischievous characters; he aims at triggering an emotional response. Inspiration is drawn from many different sources -- folk songs, fairy tales, historical biographies, poetry. They intertwine in his work.
