Shelley Weltman

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

THE FIRST TIME I saw a Pollock I fell in love with his art. Further research into the man revealed he was a troubled soul. His emotions, painted in full sight for all to view, made me understand why I am drawn to abstract art. It is only in my studio where I am free to place raw emotion onto a canvas. For me, painting in the abstract, is an opportunity to celebrate, to weep — to live!

BIOGRAPHY

I WOULD LIKE to tell you I attended art school and have practiced my art for many years, but sometimes life just gets in the way. Employed in Ohio as a paralegal for 35 years, my husband and I began painting in 2010 in our makeshift basement studio. My first attempt at painting involved applying acrylic paint using an eyedropper. I loved the way the paint blended and flowed, creating hills and valleys of color. I was hooked.

The fall of 2013 brought an exciting move to Vero Beach, Florida, where I now paint in our converted garage. I enjoy painting with acrylic, oil, watercolor and ink on large canvases. The size allows my arms the freedom to make bold, sweeping gestures. I tend to avoid planning ahead or painting in just one style; each painting varies and seems to take on a life of its own.

My first gallery show was at Vero Beach’s Gallery 14 in November 2014. Other passions in life are bareboat sailing and scuba diving with my husband where, together, our memory soaks up the blue hues of the ocean and the orange blaze of a sunset.

Painting is a journey, full of frustration, angst, elation and back again to frustration. Painting is akin to a lover who sometimes you love but sometimes hate. But, that said, my world would be gray without.
