Tomonori Nishimura

I create paintings of plants that are endangered or extinct in wild. I use metallic colors and challenge to harmonize its industrial feel and natural feel of plants. Ginkgo Biloba is a particular endangered species whose genus has survived since the Jurassic period without evolution.

In some of my paintings, the images of plants are represented by the reflection on its metallic surface. The painting is textured with brush marks and stroke of trowels to reflect the light in a certain way. The images become visible or invisible depending on the lighting.

Flanklinia Alatamaha

This plant was first discovered growing along the Altamaha River near Fort Barrington in the British colony of Georgia in October 1765. After years of study by botanists, this species was assigned to a new genus Franklinia and published in 1785. Flankilina Alatamaha is the sole species in in its genus.

Flanklinia had not been seen any other places and it was last verified in the wild in 1803. Since then, Flanklinia Alatamah is considered to be extinct in the wild. The cause of its extinction is unknown.

Lilium Nobilissimum

This species is a critically endangered species in Tokara Islands, Japan. This species was once became extinct in the wild by over-collection. The effort to revive L. Nobilissimum in its natural habitat has been being made, however the flower seems little different from its original form. After decades of repeated hybrids and adjustment to garden environment, pure and natural L. Nobilissimum might have actually been lost. The painting represents an abstract form of L. Nobilissimum.
