Gershon Kelman

About Gershon Kelman

The pop photographer, Gershon Kelman was born March 17, 1952 in Toronto, Canada. He came to the United States when he was 9 years old. Gershon was born with dyslexia. When he was 18 years old, he picked up a camera and started to take pictures, not ordinary, everyday photographs. His subject and composition of the photograph was truly “out of the box”.

Gershon Kelman has been doing freelance photography for over 30 years. He once came across information about dyslexia which he could relate.
"Dyslexic people are visual, multidimensional thinkers. We are intuitive and highly creative, and excel at hands-on learning." This made sense to him since he feels that the only way he can express himself is through the eye of a camera since he couldn't read or write well.

Thus, his journey began. Throughout the years, Gershon became known for his unique photographs of reflections off of other buildings; however, he always wanted to invent a new form a photography that no one has ever seen before. With weeks of experimenting with colorization on his computer and selecting "out of the box” photos in the city of Los Angeles, where he presently resides, he produced a unique form of photography. His current projects include: Reflections, Pop LA, and LA in the Dark as well as New York City in the Dark, Tel Aviv in the Dark, and Downtown Austin in the Dark.

Gershon Kelman imbues his breathtaking Digital Photography with a sense of emotion that transcends the picture plane, enveloping the viewer in the majesty of his innovative compelling photography. This contemporary L.A. based artist is inspired by the bold iconography of nocturnal visions of great metropolitan cities in his current “Cities in the Dark” collection. Photographing Los Angeles, Austin, Tel Aviv and New York, his lens reflects a “third eye” as his Pop Photography juxtaposes the vibrant dynamics of cosmopolitan allure pulsating with the vibrancy of these cities that never sleep. Busy Storefronts, City Buses, Gallery nights and Skyscraper facades are just a few attractions captured in Mr. Kelman’s innovative lens. After photographing the nocturnal cityscapes, he then colorizes them with multiple techniques in order to symbolize the fascinating feeling of each distinct city, allowing viewers to experience metropolitan dynamism while viewing his photographs. A portion of Mr. Kelman’s photos are in 3D, reflecting a unique look by a dyslexic artist. Mr. Kelman’s photographs are unique in their subject matter and innovative in their technique, transforming busy city streets into opulent 3D photographs full of aesthetic appeal.

Gershon Kelman works and resides in Los Angeles, CA. He exhibits his artwork internationally in group and solo exhibitions and has had notable shows throughout California in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Culver City, and Pasadena. His photographs are treasured in public and private collections worldwide.

Artist Statement

I possess the learning disability of dyslexia. Growing up, I had many obstacles to overcome. Until I found the camera, I had no idea of how to achieve this. I look at things with a very unique prism and colorize my photographs using that very unique prism.

I want to get the word out that a disability such as dyslexia does not have to hinder success and it does not have to be hidden. My goal is to mentor children and young adults with dyslexia and low self-esteem, which comes with the disability, to pursue their dreams in the arts.
My desire is to encourage people of all ages with the disability that I have, to follow their hearts and turn their disability into a gift.

The great artists; Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol were the 2 people who
were influential in making my art what it is today.

I did turn my disability into a beautiful gift for which I am thankful.
