ARTIST STATEMENT:

THE ART OF EXPERIMENTATION

Experimentation is at the core of my work and this exhibit is an experiment in abstraction. The transition from impressionism to abstraction has opened endless possibilities to explore new materials and to be more spontaneous.

Abstract painting unfolds naturally and the result can be magical and mysterious. There is no preconceived idea. The artist enjoys a feeling of freedom when working with undefined barriers and the result many times surprises. The work is a spontaneous creation that cannot be easily replicated.

As Albert Einstein said "Imagination is more important than knowledge' and abstract art truly embodies that idea. It is a true reflection of the artist-- a very personal work. Imagination offers more opportunities to play and explore while knowledge plays a secondary role by influencing the artist's search for harmony and balance through color. Sometimes I pour the paint, other times I splash it or use a brush or palette knife to apply it. I then look at the work from different angles to continue searching for completion. Many times I sign my paintings in the back, thus giving the owners the option of hanging them in different directions.

I have enjoyed this stage of my creative journey. It has opened the way for new challenges ahead. Enjoy my new work!!!!

ALL ABOUT ME (LUZMA)
LUZ MARIA GUTIERREZ

Luz Maria's need for self-expression as an artist has evolved continuously during the last ten years when oil painting became her passion. As a colorist, she instinctively uses intense colors to create an atmosphere that conveys peace and harmony in nature. Experimentation is at the core of her work and the reason behind her creative journey. The intensity of her colors reflects her "Latin American" spirit and the influence that Miami has on her work. Her technique involves using oils and cold wax and applying many layers of paint with a palette knife.

Born in Peru, she currently lives in Miami and has a studio in Coconut Grove. Her extensive travels have made it possible for her to experience art in diverse cultures and to deepen her knowledge of art. Her formal training as an artist began while living in Sao Paulo, Brazil and continued in Miami and North Carolina. Over time, her paintings have become more spontaneous and have moved away from realism towards impressionism. Her goal is to evoke a contemplative mood and to invite the viewer to share the magic and mystery of nature.

Luz Maria's work is part of private collections in Miami, Washington DC, New York, Sao Paulo and Lima.
