ARTIST STATEMENT

"My paintings are structured around two poles that are opposed in principle—“chance” and “composition.” As a starting point, I leave a large part to chance and the unexpected, then I provoke “accidents” through which I learn, as I let myself be surprised and guided by playful encounters between matter and color until a line, way or direction appears that can possibly lead to the development of a painting.

This first impulse is preceded by a period of research and experimentation with various materials often diverted from their common use before the painting can actually be “constructed.” This extensive research work results in materials that have ultra mat or super glossy textures, opaque or transparent colors/textures.

It is through this experimental process that a vocabulary is built with and around substances that combine, oppose and/or juxtapose until a final, balanced phrasing is established between expression and structuring."

TJ has taken up painting again after a professional career in a related field. He holds a degree in visual arts from Laval University (Quebec City, Canada). TJ lives and works in Montreal (Canada).

Photography of TJ's artwork was completed by Maxime Desbiens.
