Biography:
Lucia Lara was born in Havana, Cuba, in August 1976. Lucia's interest in drawing and painting developed during childhood is the matrix for the characterization, through the years, of a form of artistic expression defined and projected to show emotions and moods.
Just a few months before transferring out of Cuba at 20 years old, she had the opportunity to enroll in the National Academy of Fine Arts “San Alejandro”. There, Lucia learned the basic-technique courses of painting and drawing. After a year spent in La Plata, Argentina, and another one in a peaceful town of Portland, Oregon, --during which periods she gained lots of inspiration by the need to express her impressions and sensations through artistic creations-- Lucia moved to Miami, Florida, where she lives and works today. Lucia continues researching and expanding innovative artistic techniques and developing her own path, building landscapes for the soul, projecting them on: paper, canvas, wood, and making them real. Lucia is a self-taught professional contemporary abstract artist. In the last years she has created, exhibited and sold many original abstract paintings and drawings. "Art is my full time job and I acknowledge the fact that I am incredibly lucky since it is also something I have always loved since as far back as I can remember”. “Many of my textured abstract paintings are created with a palette knife using oils, acrylics, ink, modeling paste and sometimes whatever else is there next to me that a painting calls for”
“Other art I love are geometric abstract drawings, when creating them my mind wonders to a relaxed and completely freed state. They also have an especially modern look and feel which is perfect for the contemporary home, and hopefully, they will make you feel as relaxed looking at them as I feel when creating them.”
Artist Statement:
"Artistic inspiration arrives to me from pretty much anything I get in touch with, especially from music. The right melody puts me in the perfect state of mind that connects me with my inspirational muse. Whenever someone asks what inspires me, what my subject matter is, I always answer that I paint situations. It’s rare when I am not carrying my sketchbook with me. I love those unexpected instances when something unique happens and I get the urge to freeze that moment in time. Then I have to be able to start drawing right away to capture the essence of that experience. Otherwise it feels almost like erasing a great memory...
I have not pursued a formal art education, even if I have studied art’s most fascinating concepts and I have painted ever since I can remember. I really like to think that the “seed of the art” started growing inside me back in the times when being just a little girl, I would observe my father drawing over and over again, beautiful women walking down the shore of a breathtaking Caribbean beach at sunset. I know for sure that I started drawing and painting back then and I have never stopped...
Keeping my body of work artistically dynamic is important to me. That is why I have worked with a wide variety of mediums throughout the years to experience the feelings and effects that every material gives to my creations. I didn't set out to be a graphic design artist or to outline my art only in the context of a specific topic. But as my portfolio developed and people started to review my work, the descriptions started to emerge and I began to notice a pattern I hadn't intended but am now pleased with...
I love geometric abstracts, drawn in dramatic bright solid colors or using only the stunning contrast between black and white. Modern and abstract paintings are the most freeing for me since I can transform a blank canvas into anything I want. In a perfect world, people would look at my work and find joy and harmony. But I no longer worry about whether folks will see such things. It is after all my soulful expression, what happens when my subconscious plays with my reality, entirely subjective with absolutely no rules or constraints."
