Stephen.A.Mandell has a professional name of SAM. Born in Newburyport, Massachusetts and in 1955 his family moved to Miami Florida. SAM attended public school in Miami where he later then graduated from the University of Florida in 1975 with a Bachelor of Design Degree in the School of Architecture and Fine Arts.
Artist Statement:
"How I describe my Art is very introspective. It all comes from my mind. When you stop and look at my work there is usually more to see than meets the eye. You need to take more than a moment to look at it or you will miss something. I have been drawing and painting for over forty years. When I sit down to draw or paint I really let the pen or brush in my hand do the work. It's not anything that is usually definitive, but then something wonderful happens.
Sometimes when I draw or paint there is a definite idea in my mind that is then projected to my hand to let my hand do the work and create an abstract doodle. I consider myself a Doodleist and I would categorize my Art as Abstract Doodleism. I'll then take my doodle and put it to canvas and paint sometimes a hundred times the size of the doodle. I always see my Art as Big and Dynamic to make people see what is happening in the world around them. I want people to stop and look at my painting. I want the viewer to feel an emotional experience when they look at my painting and see what I am trying to say.
I want people to question what they have just seen. I want the viewer to think what the story I am trying to tell is, but most of all I want the viewer to interpret the work in their own way and what it means to them. If the individual then responds with a question or answer to my work then I have done my job."
