Cris Mello

Cris Mello is a self-taught artist who discovered her talent for painting in her forties, after a long season in Vienna, Austria. Alone, with a small city guide in hands and eager to walk along every single street in town, she visited most of artistic treasures in Vienna. In addition to being bathed by the waters of the Danube River and the site of Imperial Palaces, Vienna houses in its countless museums, pieces of art from great artists of all ages and styles. The explicit contact with art in every corner of the city acted as a trigger to the awakening of her gift for painting. With a few sheets of paper, some brushes and a small set of watercolors, she began to express feelings through colors, touched by that unique experience. The lucid act of painting and the reflexive way to express metaphors of life through art brought out a kind of catharsis.

After her return to homeland Brazil, painting originally meant to be a hobby, became her main activity. Thereafter, she has decided to dedicate her time exclusively to painting. Delighted with the effect that art had on her life, Cris Pimenta has directed her work aiming the development of projects that allow to approach art to people's lives. "My wish is that people recognize art (I dare to say!) as a basic need. Art has the power to transform people and to transmute the most challenging moments of intense experience into self discoveries! It is a great source of reflection and self-knowledge. Therefore, art can cause changes in personal values and through this awareness lead to positive changes in behavior."

Cris Mello has a source of inspiration in beauty and issues connected to reality. She develops pictorial figurative pictures, moving through different and various themes, mixing a wide range of colors and shades in a completely empirical experience. Her paintings reveals her natural, sensitive and intuitive essence, either representing a nature view, the beauty of flowers or the flavors of fruits, the expression of wild animals, a still life scene or even playful images like reminiscences of dreams. This artist personal technique has been developed through research and self-study what enabled her to specialize in watercolor paintings on paper. After spending a few years researching, studying, honing her technique and during most of the time painting, started in 2010 her participation in exhibitions. Her work was recognized and Cris Pimenta was invited by the Cultural Superintendent of the Parliamente Museum of Sao Paulo to make her first major solo exhibition. The exhibition "The Dream and Ideal" was curated by Emanuel von Lauenstein Massarani who wrote about her work: "Both hamlets, the characters and the vegetation of these landscapes are pretexts that fall in a context where dash and expressive chromaticism give meaning to that vision of the world that Cris Pimenta has originally inside herself. On the role of her watercolors, the artist's gestural measured loads up strength; peaceful and quiet tone becomes a disturbing gesture; the brush strokes and no more caresses and the strong colors of the landscape explodes the contradiction of the 'human condition'."

In 2012 Cris Mello held her first exhibition in foreign lands, in the United States.
