Biography and Artistic Statement

I was born and raised in rural New England. After attending The Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL in 1981,I moved back north to Manhattan. I’ve been a freelance Illustrator ever since, doing commercial storyboards for Madison Avenue. Tired of deadlines, art directors, and realistic rendering, I wanted to learn new skills and express my love of nature for my first foray into Fine Art.

My art is made from Eastern Red Cedar recovered from fallen timber in the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. Impervious to insects and decay, many of these hardwood stumps could be hundreds of years old. Each piece was laboriously salvaged, sun-dried,sawn, sanded and stained by hand.

Influenced by the ancient art of Bonsai, I retained the root’s natural form and imposed my creative vision as respectfully as possible. By allowing the wood’s complex, animalistic movement to dictate the composition, I was able to achieve elegant and harmonious results.

I finished this latest series in early 2012, after relocating back to Florida, where the beautiful beaches had a further effect on my work. Each wall sculpture may project from the wall up to fifteen inches and weigh up to 20 pounds. Their impracticality is more than offset by their originality.

“Nature is what we know
Yet have not art to say
So impotent our wisdom is
To her simplicity”
Emily Dickinson
