MONICA BOZA

Personal Statement

Colombian national of May 25th 1950, I am a Licensee in Philosophy, Literature and Languages from Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá and Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, Medellín. “Danger and Pleasure or the Work of Art” is the title of the paper presented to opt for the Licensure obtained in 2004 and is a hermeneutic approach in the enquiry into the essence of the work of art.

Brought up and educated in family and an environment of art lovers, I saw the surge of the generation of Colombian plastic artists who made the breakthrough into modernity in our country: Obregón, Botero, Grau, Ramirez Villamizar, Negret, Feliza Burstyn among others. Close and permanent experience at art exhibits, music concerts and theater enriched my own peculiar preoccupations and love of art.

I was married 15 years to an artist and accompanied him closely in his production. I also commercialized works of art on an independent basis for many years – selling both renowned Colombian and Latin American pieces. I have begun producing works of art myself – a life long process, perhaps, that reveals itself now.

The sculptures are three dimensional figures, which respond, in a manner of speaking, to the concept of “dolls”. Some pieces were inspired by certain literary characters (Beckett’s Molloy and Coetzee’s Magda). But neither these or the “Brush Strokes” are representational; whatever figures emerge from them, simply happen. There has been no intention of painting figures or of not doing so. The figures emerge; they are occult and appear in multiple ways.

I recognize each piece as unique, strongly present, capturing gesture in movement and appearing through unconcealment. Laughter strikes in them a defying chord. Hollow, ‘unfinished ‘and entangled as they are, they set thought in motion. In this conviction, I submit them to you.
