WHO I AM

BORN AND RAISED ON LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK I WAS ALWAYS ARTISTIC, AND CAME FROM A FAMILY WHERE THE COMMON THREAD WAS CREATIVITY. BY THE TIME I WAS EIGHT I HAD DECIDED TO BECOME AN ARCHITECT AND HAD MY OWN DRAFTING TABLE UPON WHICH I DESIGNED HUNDREDS OF BUILDINGS. WHEN I WAS EIGHTEEN, I ATTENDED THE SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO BUT I QUICKLY REALIZED THAT I COULD NOT CONQUER THE MATH. I CHANGED MAJORS AND STUDIED COMMUNICATIONS AT EMERSON COLLEGE IN BOSTON INSTEAD. WHEN I GRADUATED AND COULDN'T FIND EMPLOYMENT IN THE FIELD OF COMMUNICATIONS, I ATTENDED COSMETOLOGY SCHOOL IN BOSTON AND THEN FORT LAUDERDALE AND BECAME A HAIRSTYLIST WHICH HAS BEEN MY PRIMARY OCCUPATION FOR MANY YEARS. HOWEVER, I HAVE BEEN OTHER THINGS ALONG THE WAY: REALTOR, AMATEUR BAKER AND CERTIFIED INTERIOR DESIGNER. I SEEM TO HAVE SPENT MY ENTIRE LIFE IN THE PURSUIT OF CREATING BEAUTIFUL THINGS. SOMETIMES, IT HAS BEEN A HOME THAT HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF MY NEED TO CREATE. OTHER TIMES, A PERFECT FRENCH MACARON OR THE CREATION OF A BEAUTIFUL HEAD OF HAIR HAS BEEN THE GOAL. THROUGHOUT IT ALL THE CONSTANT HAS BEEN THE "EYE." I HAVE ALWAYS FOUND TREMENDOUS SATISFACTION IN HAVING THE ABILITY TO SEE THE POTENTIAL AND CAUSE IT TO EVOLVE WHETHER IT BE WITH A BLOW DRYER, A SPATULA OR A CAN OF PAINT.
AND NOW..... WITH MY CAMERA.

WHAT I DO

I AM VERY GRATEFUL THAT I LIVE A LIFESTYLE THAT HAS ALLOWED ME TO TRAVEL QUITE FREQUENTLY WITH MY PARTNER OF 15 YEARS. MY PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY IS NOT NEW. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE IN THE BACKGROUND SINCE LONG BEFORE MY COLLEGE DAYS IN THE DARKROOM. TODAY, PHOTOGRAPHY HAS TAKEN CENTER STAGE IN MY LIFE AND HAS BECOME THE DRIVING FORCE. AS MY PARTNER'S PASSIONS ARE TRAVEL AND PLANNING, HE CREATES THE ITINERARIES. WE TRAVEL THESE DAYS SO THAT I MAY TAKE MY PHOTOGRAPHS. WE TRAVEL NOW TO " GET THE SHOT." WE BRING THEM HOME AND I STUDY THEM. I PUT THEM THROUGH THE TORTURE OF NUMEROUS PROGRAMS, SUCH AS "LIGHTROOM," AND HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE SOFTWARE SO THAT MULTIPLE IMAGES MAY BE MERGED TOGETHER TO MORE CLOSELY CAPTURE WHAT THE HUMAN EYE CAN SEE THAT A CAMERA SENSOR CANNOT. MY DESIGN AESTHETIC OF MINIMALISM IS ALWAYS PRESENT IN MY IMAGES. THEY ARE SIMPLE, UNCLUTTERED AND EVOKE POWERFUL RESPONSES IN THE SAME FASHION AS THE INTERIORS I HAVE DESIGNED. I FLIRT WITH COLOR IN CUSTOMARILY SUBDUED IMAGES AND DRAIN SATURATION ALMOST TO THE POINT OF NON-EXISTENCE IN ORDINARILY BOLD COLORFUL SETTINGS. THIS JUXTAPOSITION OF COLOR AND LACK OF COLOR CHALLENGES THE VIEWER IN THEIR EXPERIENCE OF MY PHOTOGRAPHY. IT IS 2012, AND THE COMPUTER IS NOW THE DARKROOM. AND SO FAR WHAT I HAVE LEARNED IS THAT THE IMAGE YOU SEE THROUGH THE CAMERA LENS IS JUST THE BEGINNING. THAT IMAGE, LIVING INSIDE ITS DIGITAL WORLD CAN BE MADE TO YIELD TO THE "EYE." AND SO IT GOES.

ALL OF MY CREATIVE ENDEAVORS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT THE PLEASURE OF THE AUDIENCE. TO ME, THERE IS NOTHING MORE POWERFUL THAN CREATING THAT "WOW " FEELING IN OTHERS. TO THAT END THERE HAVE BEEN MANY VEHICLES.
