John began his professional career as a musician in Chicago. During this time he also explored writing and participated in the visual and performing arts.
In 1970, with the purchase of a camera, he began his life as an artist and started his own photography business in a range of venues. John travelled to thirty countries photographing everything he found interesting and unique. He spent long hours in the darkroom where he created museum quality prints in both black & white and color for his portfolio. The arrival of Photoshop enabled him to produce works that are virtually impossible to duplicate in the darkroom. He related to the decision that confronted Ansel Adams, an accomplished pianist: whether to choose a life in music or photography.
Recently, John decided to translate his talent for artistic photography into a new medium. He envisioned his art on canvas, so he rented a studio and immersed himself in the process of painting.
Influenced by the work of Jackson Pollock, John paints in the action style using acrylics on canvas. "I like the speed and immediacy of the action painting," he says. "It's always very exciting and the paintings do have a life of their own. With just about every painting, I start out with a definite idea and definite colors but then the painting usually goes in its own direction. Often, when it seems as if the painting is not going to be a success, I find that with a little more paint and moving the canvas a bit, I have a finished piece that I am very excited about. Miracles happen for me all time with this style of painting."
