About Hilma
Hilma was born and raised in the Netherlands. From her early years on, there was always a strong inner drive to see and explore other countries and cultures. She decided in the early 90’s to leave her home country to discover the world. On Curaçao, a tropical island in the Caribbean, she met her husband and together they stayed there for more than twenty years.
It was during her temporary stay on the Island of Bonaire, that she started with painting. Painting and working with driftwood became her passion and marked her start as an artist. She was impressed by the serenity of the island, surrounded by a deep turquoise sea and inspired by the cheerful Caribbean lifestyle. The characteristic and colorful old buildings and houses on Curacao, each with their own historical stories created an everlasting and overwhelming impression.
As a result of following multiple art classes by professional artists and working with different materials in the past 14 years, her development of skills and expressions is clearly visible in her artwork. In her colorful paintings of various subjects Hilma is known for her own and very recognizable signature. The energy and passion is almost palpable and the vibrating influences of Miami are clearly reflected in her latest artwork.
Hilma currently lives in South Florida with her husband and their two pets.
Artist Statement
"The start of a new painting is always a very exciting moment. The empty canvas is waiting for my ideas and decisions where to start, what to paint, spontaneously or with a plan and what colors I’m going to use...My influences and inspirations are found everywhere in my daily life, but especially during my meditative strolls along the shore...
Primarily I paint in acrylics and love to give some texture to my work. Sometimes I also decide to use other materials, like fabrics, ink, self printed papers and other mixed media. My artwork is in most cases abstract, although I still enjoy to create my expressive and colorful tulips. I enjoy the freedom to express my feelings and emotions and working intuitively. The whole process during the making of the painting is a very challenging one. I have my moment of struggling, happiness and once and a while even being insecure how to proceed and at which moment to decide that the painting is finished...But finally it’s time for me to relax by enjoying the final result and to feel satisfied about my new piece of art. I really do hope that you also will like and enjoy my artwork."
