Richard Hager

Richard Hager is a member to the Sarasota artist community having relocated here from California.
Richard Hager is a largely self-taught sculptor who sought an artistic outlet during his career as an engineer and business executive. In 2001 aftermany years of experimenting with primitive and abstract forms, he developed a passion for figurative sculpture under the tutelage of Marty Davis at the Athenaeum in San Diego. In 2003 he spent several inspiring months studying stone carving and sculpture in Italy. His pursuit of the human form in sculpture revolves around the traditional themes of identity and transformation of the individual.
Richard has participated in several national and international exhibitions. Especially well received was his "Poetry for the Eye" exhibition at Balboa Park in San Diego.
Richard is a member of the National Sculpture Society and a past member of the San Diego Sculpture Guild.
Statement:

First and foremost, I am driven by the form and beauty of the figure. I bring out the natural beauty of the subject during the process of modeling the sculpture.
My work revolves around the traditional themes of one's search for identity and the transitions in one's life. These themes have been explored by artists for thousands of years, but they still resonate today.
The nude is an excellent vehicle to explore one's identity and place in the world. The women in my figures are
contemplating these issues or they are in a stop motion
while they examine the next step in their lives.

My work has a timeless nature in that there is no clue
as to the historical context of the sculpture. The figures
are complete within themselves and do not need any
reference to the outside world.
