In this exhibit Thomas uses innovative methods and materials to create a series of paintings and reliefs of remarkable originality both in two and three dimensions. He has chosen a single theme using a vast array of materials including lime wash patinas, space age foam board, oil pastels, oil paints, and crayon. Working for weeks and months on individual details, particularly on the relief piece, Thomas engages a variety of artistic disciplines learned and honed over the years to create a visually stunning point of view of the Bismarkia Palm.
The Bismarkia Palm was chosen for this series as it fascinates Thomas's visual, intellectual and emotional senses. Its serene nature, quite pastel hues, and perfectly intertwined bark at its base, belie the seemingly violent and Fourth of July explosiveness of its star like leaves. This year Thomas presents his work in Art Basel, Miami for the first time since his previous show in 2010. He creates with the knowledge that beauty is in the pursuit of art in color, light and line. His influences include Gauguin, Degas, Pissaro, Klimt, Hockney, and Thiebaud, to name a few.
Thomas Kachian is a 1983 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh with a degree in Fine Arts and a concentration in Art History. His undergraduate degree is in drawing and painting with an emphasis on landscape and the figure. He continued postgraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison for four additional years again with an emphasis on drawing and painting, concentrating on figurative and landscape themes. His classical training includes a study of sculpture particularly with work in the Lost Wax Bronze and Aluminum Casting processus.
Thomas was born in Racine, Wisconsin and lives in Miami, Florida where he has his studio (and design company).
