Janis Siegel

JANIS FEY SIEGEL is a painter and fiber artist. She studied painting, sculpture and fiber art at the Art Institute of Chicago. There she developed a series of large format fiber sculptures based on 19th Century fashions which sought to enhance the female form, but ended up binding and distorting it. These were exhibited in the Betty Rymer Gallery in the Art Institute.
Along with her art-making Janis owned and operated several boutiques in Chicago featuring her own and other artists’ wearable art designs. In the early ‘80s she opened the JANIS shop pioneering the concept of art as fashion in Chicago’s newly developing River North Gallery district.
Early in the ‘90s Janis returned to painting primarily in oils and gouache She moved to Naples, Florida in 2000, establishing her own studio behind her home. In 2003 she began sharing her studio with Louis Salvati. Each artist continues producing individual works. For Janis these include large scale abstract oils, collages, and works on both paper and canvas. Siegel & Salvati also collaborate on paintings, lucite three-dimensional painted sculptures, and 3 to 6 panel, free-standing abstract screens Many of their collaborative efforts are private commissions.
