Artist Bio / Statement
Nacida en Nueva York, de padres puertorriqueños , Gladys Nieves siempre tuvo inclinación por las artes plásticas. Es por ello que, a pesar de que posee una maestría en Psicología de la Universidad de Nueva York (NYU),también curso estudios en el Art Students League.
En dicha institución estudió dibujo, pintura, grabado y escultura entre los años de 1978 hasta el 1986.En ese mismo año (1986) decide partir hacia Italia para continuar estudios en escultura, donde desarrolló destrezas en la talla de mármol. El trabajo que produjo, fue expuesto en 1987 en una serie de exposiciones tituladas Chiostro di Santa Agostina, en Pietrasanta; y Omaggio All'Italia, en Marignana, Camaiore.
En 1990 regresa a Nueva York e instala su taller, produciendo suficiente material para exhibir. Es así como presenta su exposición Tridimentional Duality en el Hostos Community College. Al año entrante el Museo de Arte de Ponce presenta una selección de sus obras, año que marca su traslado a la Isla y el establecimiento de un Taller de Escultura en piedra en el Centro de Bellas Arte del Municipio de Guayama.
Otras exposiciones han sido: Miami Beach Designer Showcase (1992),Centro de Bellas Arte de Guayama(1993-98), Museo de Arte e Historia de San Juan (1994),Museo Antigua Aduana de Arroyo(1994-98),Museo Castillo Serralles de Ponce(2000).
Ha trabajado, además, varias obras comisionadas como el Busto de Antonio Paoli Marcano en el Panteón Nacional Ramón Baldoriot y de Castro en Ponce, por el instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña (1992) ; y un monumento para el Colegio Guamani en Guayama(1997),patrocinado por esa misma institución.
Su obra ha sido seleccionada para integrar distintas Colecciones Privadas como la del Museo de Arte de Ponce ,el Museo Francisco Oller en Bayamón, el Centro de Bellas arte de Guayama y el Museo Antigua en Arroyo.
Born in New York, of Puerto Rican parents, Gladys Nieves always had an inclination for the plastic arts. That is why, despite having a master's degree in Psychology from the University of New York (NYU), she also studied at the Art Students League.
In that institution she studied drawing, painting, engraving and sculpture between the years of 1978 and 1986. In that same year (1986) she decided to go to Italy to continue studies in sculpture, where she developed skills in marble carving. The work she produced was exhibited in 1987 in a series of exhibitions titled Chiostro di Santa Agostina, in Pietrasanta; and Omaggio All'Italia, in Marignana, Camaiore.
In 1990 she returned to New York and set up her workshop, producing enough material to exhibit. This is how she presents his Tridimentional Duality exhibition at Hostos Community College. Next year the Art Museum of Ponce presents a selection of hes works, year that marks her transfer to the island and the establishment of a Stone Sculpture Workshop at the Fine Arts Center of the Municipality of Guayama.
Other exhibitions have been: Miami Beach Designer Showcase (1992), Fine Arts Center of Guayama (1993-98), Museum of Art and History of San Juan (1994), Old Customs Museum of Arroyo (1994-98), Castle Museum Serralles de Ponce (2000).
She has also worked on several commissioned works such as the Bust of Antonio Paoli Marcano in the Ramón Baldoriot National Pantheon and of Castro in Ponce, by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (1992); and a monument for the Guamani School in Guayama (1997), sponsored by that same institution.
Her work has been selected to integrate different Private Collections such as the Art Museum of Ponce, the Francisco Oller Museum in Bayamón, the Fine Arts Center of Guayama and the Ancient Museum in Arroyo.
Her motto is always "Only respecting the dignity of the materials used is that I can give life to my Art"
