D.L. Watson

Biography

I was born in Cleveland, Ohio. My family moved to Miami when I was quite young. Both my parents were artists. My father pursued a career in commercial art in Miami at a time when Miami was beginning to thrive. My mother painted portraits while at home raising four children. I watched my mother paint but most of my inspiration came from my father working long hours in his home studio.
Early on I studied many forms of art including ceramics, sculpture and mosaic. In college I added fashion design and interior design. After college I worked for many years as an interior designer. I continued to paint and sold my art through interior design, galleries and private commissions. While raising two children, I stayed at home and would paint when I could.
I am now at a point in my life that I am able to devote full time to painting. I have continued my education in art, taking workshops in different parts of the country. I have a studio in South Florida and a studio in the high desert of Bend, Oregon. I have the best of both worlds.

Statement

My painting is an expression of both conscious thought and deep underlying emotion. Through color and texture, my expression usually involves a process of layering which is done intuitively scraping, adding and taking away until somehow an image either abstract, or real is revealed.
Metamorphosis (the Butterfly series) my new work is somewhat different. The layering of the images relate to the life cycle of the butterfly. Sometimes visual, as in pattern shape and color and sometimes emotional, as in transformation, vulnerability, and fragility.
By working in large scale I am better able to achieve a more vibrant and dramatic work allowing me to better engage myself emotionally. It is in this expression of self discovery that I have found my life's passion.
