Marie Hankin

Born in Brussels, Belgium
Self-taught artist

Since my youth, I have always been in relation with the world of art as my father was a decorator.
Later, travelling in Europe, I have been selling antiques from France and Italy.
Art has always been, for me, a passion.
In the meanwhile, I tried every kind of artistic expression: paintings, drawings and photography.
One day, I experienced pastel as a medium. I was fascinated by the result, and did not stop, until now, to continue in that way.
At that period, amazed by the artworks of Braque, Juan Gris and of course Picasso, I took my inspiration in cubism.
Later, I discovered Tamara de Lempicka who is, for me, an interesting artist.
Some works of that period were sold in auction houses in Belgium and Germany.
Since three years, I take my inspiration in actuality: newspapers, magazines and television.
In my opinion, one cannot stay insensible on what happens around us. Anything of what I feel to be injustice hurts me deeply.
I try to transpose in my work my inner feelings about a certain society and my revolt against what happens in the world. I feel compassion for people who are rejected by a well thinking society.
One of my other revolts is the cruelty people can sometimes have towards animals.
I think that people need being shocked in order to be wakening up in their peaceful life.
This is all what I try to express in my work and I hoop to reach my aim.

Several works in private collections: Brussels, Paris, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, South of France, Los Angeles.
