A self-taught artist who embraces various art Forms, Margrit-Rose People was born in Berlin, Germany. She has been a Coconut Grove resident since 1995. While in Berlin, she studied at the “Akademie fuer Bildende Kuenste und Graphik-Design” and also worked for numerous years as an advertising artist at “Schering AG”.
When she moved to Florida, Margrit became strongly influenced by the tropical surroundings. This has led to her extensive work in painting plants and animals in watercolor- a great many of which are already in private collections. In addition, Margrit has continued the work she began in Germany with abstracts.
Margrit’s varied career, in addition to her work as a commercial artist, includes the design of necklaces out of African glass trade beads and silver beads, as well as clothing design and the restoration of African masks and statuary. Margrit’s work with authentic African materials has led her to create portraits of African individuals from many tribes, as well as graceful wildlife paintings.
Her most recent efforts include decoupage and design of boxes, shelves and cabinets.
She finds creative inspiration from various tribal cultures and utilizes her traveling experiences as a foundation to explore our global heritage.
Her abstracts are influenced by stone carvings from the “Shona” tribe (Zimbabwe), combined with the magic of the orient. Lately she started to paint on burlap, using oil, acrylic and watercolor. The strongest influence on her artistic development was the encounter with the African culture and her fascination with African artifacts.
