Pilar Honorato

ARTIST STATMENT

Painting has evolved in me since I was a kid. At first it was all about drawing and making stories about what I drew, then I evolved to pastels and finally a return to lines when I began studying design. All them mixed together has made my paintings unique with a little bit of everything.

If too many days go by without painting I feel anxious, I just need to paint, to express. Every time I start a new painting I get so excited as to what is going to be the end result of what I have on my mind, that I just can’t wait to finish. I start with a vague idea but the process for me is what it’s all about. I love to see the different stages of the painting; the first stroke, the first layer of painting, the accidents that sometimes make wonders, every little detail that builds up to the final result.

I immerse myself in my work and I become breathing the colors, the strokes, the painting. I try to let go without thinking.

I love to create something bright and colorful and yet something peaceful to the eyes. For me it’s worth it if the painting brings joy and happiness. I want to challenge the viewers’ imagination and try to touch their emotions. An escape from the day-to-day life.

I am always changing the style of my paintings. I need to experiment with different things to see what happens and get different results to work with in future projects. Behind the paintbrush there are also knives scrappers, rollers, sponges etc. So I can work acrylic paint into many different textures.

BIOGRAPHY

Pilar Honorato was born in Santiago, Chile. She studied at the University Finnis Terrae, School of Art and Design; just after graduating she came to the USA, to Boston in late 2000. While living there she attended art courses at the Museum of Fine Arts. Then moved to Miami in 2002 where she took some courses at the Art Center of South Florida.

Her abstract art began garnishing attention after the presentation of her first works through private friend showings. Her paintings quickly become a source of fresh new inspiration for art lovers.

The main body of work by Pilar Honorato consists of acrylics on canvas but nothing is off limits. Her fearless approach to abstract painting has contributed to a vast array of styles ranging from purely abstract-to-abstract figurative representations. The ambitious use of vibrant colors and directed markings in one painting can contrast with the warm, soothing flow effect of another.

Pilar is mainly a self-taught artist. She is just developing her style, experimenting in the use of materials, working with collage and assemblages incorporating non-traditional materials.
