Carol Carpenter

Artist Biography

Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1948, Carol Carpenter is native to the Washington D.C. area. Growing up she loved theater and dance and fantasized about a career on stage. Her parents, however, thought academics critical to success and did not support her wishes. Out of frustration and boredom, she taught herself to paint never imagining a career in art.

A graduate of Antioch University with a dual major in Psychology and Art, she spent her early adult years working as a research associate in psychiatric settings at the National Institute of Mental Health; the Albert Einstein College of Medicine; and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She also married, raised a family, created a catering business, taught painting at a community college and finally found time to make art a priority.

Painting has always been a passion. As an intuitive painter she uses experimental processes and a saturated palette to create vivid works of organic abstract art. While her paintings often tackle familiar subject matter such as landscapes and floral elaborations, her rich colors sets her depictions apart, approaching Modern Expressionistic style. Working with oil, acrylic, watercolor and ink mediums, she produces abstract layers of paint beneath the final image which provides a new perspective, inspiration and vision in creating a unique way to view the outside world.

She is mystified by the natural beauty in nature and uses color to transcend the balance between reality and imagination. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States, and more recently has made an international presence. She is currently represented by galleries in New York City, Miami, Nice and Paris. Her paintings are included in private and institutional collections.

Artist Statement

"Creating works of art is a compelling life force. It encompasses passion, spontaneity, intellect and self-discovery. My art is not politically sensitive or culturally eye-opening. It is simply meant to appeal to the senses and heighten the human experience...

Inspired by the ever changing elements and beauty in nature, I enjoy abstracting and reinventing familiar forms to create new images that strike a balance between imagination and reality. Employing multi-media techniques in oil, acrylic, ink and water color paint on a variety of surfaces, I use color as my primary focus to transmit energy, meaning and emotion in my art."

Born in the USA in 1948, Carol Carpenter is an award winning artist currently living and working in Columbia, Maryland.
