Biography
Lyda Longa was born in Havana, Cuba in July 1959.
Like many other Cubans, my parents and I came to Miami in 1960 when I was a year old. I have many artistic relatives on both sides of my family. Famous Cuban sculptor Rita Longa is my second cousin on my father’s side and on my mother’s side there were several accomplished musicians.
I have never taken an art class in my life. My career has centered on writing and I have been a newspaper reporter in Florida and Atlanta for almost 30 years. I have worked at the now defunct Miami News, the Sun-Sentinel, the Wall Street Journal and the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, always specializing in crime writing. I am currently a crime reporter at the Daytona Beach News Journal. I started painting - which I am now passionate about - only about three months ago. This after a psychic medium told me she saw me “surrounded in color” and that I needed to start painting.
Artist Statement
"I am new at this art thing. But I know I love it and I really love non-representational abstract. I paint in acrylic because I love the richness and boldness of it...
I use palette knives and sponges more than I use brushes. I often close my eyes and let the knife of brush guide me."
