I began to draw at an early age, working with charcoal to create detailed realism.
As an illustrator, I painted with an airbrush, tediously masking and painting. I started to sylize my work and painted freely with paint brushes.
I progressed to the abstract. And an abstract of an abstract. Now I love to distort the figure while allowing the viewer to see the image in its natural composition.
Many times I piece together two images that share common lines. Sometimes I like to work the image to its utmost minimalistic state. Whatever the puzzle or the technique, I aim to capture an emotion.
Janet M Mueller moved to Key West, Florida from her home town, Champaign, Illinois in December, 1993.
She has a B.S. in Marketing, College of Commerce, from the University of Illinois and spent the years from 1977 to 1989 as a graphic designer and writer-producer of TV commercials and print advertisements.
She created fabric designs as well. Her clothes were shown at the Textile Arts Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. In 1990, she was commissioned by Spiegel Catalog to paint 900 dresses. They also wanted her fashion illustrations turned into signed and numbered prints. After this project was completed, Janet decided to be a painter of fine art.
From 1991 to 1993, Janet M Mueller dedicated herself to the creation of 24 paintings, using gouache on watercolor paper, plus one sculpture. This collection was shown in a solo exhibit at Gallery105 in Champaign, IL. in March 1993.
Since that time, Janet has had numerous solo exhibits in Key West, FL, Lexington, KY, Rome, Italy (2001), and in 2005 at the Key West Museum of Art and History at the Custom House. Her paintings, gouache on paper or oil on canvas, are bold and vibrant. The artist's style and technique are self-taught and have developed and changed over the years.
