Physician and Artist
David was born in a small town in Poland in December, 1929. His immediate family was one of the few lucky ones that sought a life in another continent just before the debacle and massacre that engulfed the world soon after. They emigrated to Colombia, South America, when David was still a small child. David’s character and personality and his tenacity in the face of adversity, which included learning a new language and joining a completely different culture, while having little means are a testament to his character and resilience. With these traits, David finished high school as a top student and was admitted into the Universidad Nacional to study the art of Medicine.
He went on to practice a required year of rural medicine in the town of Amagá, Antioquia, during the time known in Colombia as “La Violencia”. After completing the required rural service, David was accepted for a residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Lincoln Hospital in The Bronx, NY. Once again he followed his passion and his path to another country and a different culture. David also met and married the woman who would always provide support, love and respect. “Hilda” as she is known, has been by his side through every episode and adventure for over 58 years and counting. David returned to Colombia and established a successful private practice in his field of specialty, starting in late 1959 through 1977. After over 17 years of practice, David and his family moved once again to the United States, starting out in Miami, Florida, and then moving to Dallas, Texas. David continued his practice until his retirement in 1994.
Throughout his medical career David also found time to follow his other artistic callings. Not only was endowed with a wonderful tenor voice, but the natural talent to create paintings using a spectrum of colors that take the breath away. This leads us to the present, when David spends his creative days painting in watercolors that are alive, colorful and very captivating. Words never will be able to describe the range of styles encompassed by this self-taught modern painter. Even during his medical career David painted. He painted diagrams needed to learn medicine while at the medical school; he painted during his practice and lastly, David has spent his retirement years painting and expanding his styles.
Traveling provides him the first-hand experience of places such as France, Italy, Colombia, Israel, and even in the United States, with Miami Beach, Chicago, and Dallas, Arizona’s Great Canyon, California and others providing inspiration and the theme for many of his works. David’s works regaled us by being published in the covers of the Dallas County Medical Society’s monthly magazines month after month. He exhibited at various locations, including the Dallas Public Library, Dallas Visual Arts Center, Richardson Public Library and other small and large venues. The works of David Rozemberg bring out the contrast and emotions experienced throughout his life. There is an old world European style, the feel of post-impressionist France, mixed with the fresh and natural feelings of the Andean landscapes.
As far as artistic style go, the blast of colors and the use of black on white, can only cause the heart to beat stronger when looking, absorbing and being drawn by such unambiguous works. Just like opening the eyes to true beauty one can only discover more and stronger details the longer we look at these water colors. The details may appear diffused at first glance, but the true details are just as obvious. Like a book that is read from cover to cover, each painting develops its characters drawn within. The sounds of ocean waves, the smells of the sea, and the purifying feel of a mountain breeze all come out of each masterpiece. The only way to truly experience the beauty and powers of his work is by placing them in a prominent, well lit environment and admiring them without interruption.
